Area Description
Skaleta
Skaleta is a small village located on Crete’s north-central coast, about 12 kilometers east of Rethymnon and 67 kms east of Heraklion. It is a picturesque and historical settlement but for the past couple of years it has become a popular resort and has got several hotels, restaurants, and shops. The harbour of Skaleta, which was in use during the second Byzantine period, the churches of Zoodochou Pighis (live-giving spring) and of St. Nicholas, as well as archaeological finds in the environment testify the existence of a period that has not been forgotten during the course of the centuries. The rocky part of the coastal area boasts a number of caves, the Poseidon cave being the most important among them, to which access is possible from the sea only.
